A "Conservatorship" is granted by a court to individuals who are not mentally competent enough to make their own decisions. Basically, it is giving the remote control of your life to someone else who is supposed to make the right decisions for you.

Britney Spears was not keeping up with her mental health since 2007 soon after her divorce from ex-husband Kevin Federline and it became worse after she lost the custody of her two children.

Britney had series of public outbursts in 2008 ranging from shaving her head to hitting a photographer's car with an umbrella, she was also admitted to a hospital under a temporary psychiatric assessment ruling after an incident in which she refused to surrender her sons also involving a stand-off with the police.

It was from then she was provided with conservatorship and she hasn't handled any of her finances since 2008. Her conservatorship included two parts, one the estate management and financial one, and the other is her personal life, both of which were handed to her father Jamie Spears.

In 2019 her father stepped down as her personal conservator owing to health reasons and a care professional named Jodi Montgomery replaced him temporarily, Britney insisted that he is made permanent.

But the singer later sought to dismiss her father from the role of her conservator. And the reasons behind it lead to our next point.

According to a confidential report released by trusted media sources, it claimed that Spearsbhad been fighting against this long before and has also filed a petition against it citing that it has become a tool and is controlling her life in the most oppressive way possible, that she couldn't even abstain from things she didn't wish to do.

#FreeBritney movement was started long ago in 2009 by a fan site calling out for conservatorship back then, but it got prominence in 2019 when Britney was admitted to mental health center citing emotional distress due to her father's illness which made her fans skeptical of her conservatorship and went as far as submitting a petition in the white house with tens of thousands of signatures to end her conservatorship.

Britney maintained a tight lip over the entire scenario until earlier this year when her lawyer requested a hearing where she could address the court directly on her conservatorship. And her 20 min long statement was the one that shook the entire world.

3. The dark reality of conservatorship and how it enslaved Britney spears into her own glamourous life.

In the much-anticipated hearing in an LA Court, the star asked her " Abusive" conservatorship to end citing that she just wants her life back.

In a 20 min long emotional address, Britney disclosed several abusive and inhumane incidents such as being forced to use birth control and no control over her love life and also whom she will marry. She went on far as explaining it to be a form of slavery, where she was even reprimanded from changing even a choreography move which she didn't like.

This was Britney Spears we never heard of and she concluded that " This conservatorship is doing me way more harm than good" adding " I deserve to have a life."

What all of it holds for Britney's future as a pop star? Will she perform again and how the court is going to look into the matter? All of it is explained in detail in the video below:

Following Britney's testimony, her father's lawyer said that his client is sorry to see his daughter suffering and is so much in pain.

Many popular celebrities have come out in Britney's support like Miley Cyrus, Paris Hilton, Bette Midler, and Khloé Kardashian.
